RIVIERSONDEREND
- WHERE 2 HIKE:
The
Kleinbergie Hiking Trail is a fascinating climb thanks to the
signal canons along the way that were part of the former
Overberg Signal Canon system.
The main purpose of the canons were to call the residents in
the area for
military service if there were indications of war in the Cape.
The canons were used in 1795 and 1806 during the first and
second occupation of the Cape with the canon signal system
being used 8 times in total.

From the highest point on the trail, tourists have the best
view of the town as well as the surrounding Overberg areas,
the Sonderend River and beautiful fynbos.

The
Sonderend river flows at the foot of this hiking trail and
offers fishing, swimming and canoeing.

South
Africa's national bird namely the Blue Crane are also commonly
seen in the area.
